from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Mr Gurney was born in the year 1821 at Northolt near London. He received his commercial training from an uncle who was a wool merchant at Hounslow and succeeded to his uncle’s business. In 1857 he came to Bradford and for nearly 30 years continued to trade as a wool merchant, but in 1880 he entered upon the business of a stockbroker, which he carried on with one of his sons, until his death. He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1864 and at the time of his death was the oldest Magistrate on the City Bench. Mr Gurney was a Conservative and a Churchman and was for some time the Honorary Steward of the Bradford Library.

He died in 1898 leaving a widow, three sons and four daughters."
