Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of Henry Brady Priestman. Born May 18th, 1853, at Thornton near Pickering, educated High School, Bradford. Apprenticed to Alfred Priestman & Co, made partner in 1874. Member of Council Technical College, member of Council Friends Providence Institution, President Friends Adult Schools.

from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was the eldest son of the late Mr John Prestage man, and ex-Alderman, and was born in 1853 at Thornton near Pickering. He was educated at the Bradford High School and a course of private tuition under Dr Willis.

When 17 years of age he entered the business of Alfred Priestman & Co at Brick Lane Mills in which he subsequently became a partner and later the firm became HB Priestman and & Co. He was a member of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce and deputy chairman of the Spinners section. He was also a member of the Manningham Cricket Club for 25 seasons and for many years captain of the first eleven. In 1891 he was elected chairman of the Central Division Liberal Association. For some years he was on the Council of the Mechanics’ Institute and the Committee of the Technical School.

He was on the board of the Bradford Infirmary and he is a director of the Friends Provident institution. He is a member of the Bradford Board of Conciliation & was interested in the Children's Hospital.

At 16 years of age he was a speaker on the Band of Hope platform and is still a staunch supporter and advocate as ever he was.

For a long period Alderman Priestman was the President of the Bradford Adult School, the period extending over 30 years and has held ..." To be continued
