from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Was born at Hamburg in 1817, and came to Bradford in 1841. He was one of the original partners in the firm of N, P and H Nathan, and in 1866 he founded the business of J Philipp & Co, stuff merchants, from which he retired in 1885 owing to failing health. He was probably the oldest merchant in Bradford and was much esteemed for his kindly and generous disposition. He was one of the founders of the Bradford District Bank. In politics he was a Liberal. He died in 1897 in his 81st year leaving three sons and two daughters."
