Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of George Poole, auctioneer aged 71.
Sowden's note in notebooks:
"Mr Poole was born in 1817. He entered business on his own account about 1845 and became known as the most popular auctioneer in the town. He retired in 1891 from the business which was carried on by his sons Mr Alfred and Mr Chas. Wm. Poole. For some fifteen years Mr Poole sat on the Bradford Town Council as a representative of the West Ward and was for 14 years a member of the Bradford Board of Guardians. He was a Conservative and a Churchman. He took a strong interest in Charitable work and particularly in connection with the institution of the first ragged school in Bradford. He died in 1891 leaving a widow, 4 sons and 5 daughters."
