Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of Thomas Priestley, born at Thornton 14th September, 1841, educated at Kipping, Borough West & Harrison's Schools. Entered business with his father as manufacturer, after made partner with Briggs Priestley commenced on own account 1876. Town Councillor 7 years. Member of Council Technical College.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born at Thornton in 1841 and was the younger son of Mr Henry Priestley. In 1850 his father came to Bradford and began business as a worsted manufacturer. He was educated at Borough West School, Preston Place School, and then Mr Harrison's ‘Academy’ in Tetley Street. He however went to work at an early age and in his father millll obtained his training. Mr Henry Priestley and Mr Briggs Priestley were in partnership for some years, and on his father’s retiring, Alderman Priestley took his place in the firm in 1869. The partnership was dissolved in 1876, Alterman Priestley taking over the Shearbridge works. Afterwards he removed to Bank Top Mills, Great Horton. Here he carried on an extensive business, having for a partner his eldest son, the firm being Thomas Priestley & Son.
He was a Liberal in politics and in religious matters a Congregationalist. He took a leading parked in the affairs of the Central Liberal Club.
He entered the Town Council in 1884 and was a member of the Corporation for 14 years, representing the Exchange Ward, and was made an Alderman in 1891. In the same year he was elected Mayor. His chief work on the Corporation was in connection with the Market & Fairs Committee.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and was a Justice of the Peace. He died in 1910 in his 67th year."
