Biographical note in Sowden's notebook:
Sir Theo Peel of Potter [?????] Hall, Barwick-in-Elmet was born in 1837 & was one of the familiar figures in Bradford. He was the third son of the late Mr William Peel of Oakworth Hall, Pontefract. Many years Chairman of the West Riding Magistrates at Pontefract. Sir Theo was equally well known to many county residents and especially to that portion which has been "presented at Court", viz the Hall of Justice in Hall Ings, for Sir Theo presided over the County Bench in Bradford for many years. In his day Sir Theo was a considerable politician and at a general election contested the Shipley Division, but was defeated by Mr W. B. Byles. He was a spinner & manufacturer & owner of Globe Mills, City Rd, Bfd, and Thornton Mills, Thornton. The business was established in 1866 & was one of the first in Bradford to embark in the worsted coating trade. Up to 1886 Mr Theo Peel always supported the Liberal Party, but when Home Rule came to the front he joined the Liberal Unionists. Sir Theo Peel's reward for diligent political service came in 1897 when he was made a Baronet. His previous honours included a Deputy-Lieutenancy for the West-Riding & in 1902 he was High Sheriff of Yorkshire. Sir Theo, married in 1890, Miss Isabella Maud Barnes, daughter of Captn Barnes (17th ????????????). He died in 1911.
