Watercolour portrait of Edward Priestman Aged 52
From John Sowden's notebooks:
"Son of the late John Priestman and was born in 1838 at Whetley Hill, Bradford. He was educated at the Quaker Schools, at Bootham, York and Grove House, Tottenham. Entered the business in his father’s firm of John Priestman & Co, and retired in 1899. He entered the Town Council in 1881 and represented Little Horton Ward.
Mr Priestman was President of the Bradford branches of YMC, of the United Kingdom Alliance of Working Men's Teetotal Association and was on the committee of the Bradford Town Mission. He was an able platform speaker in the cause of Liberalism. He was an ardent lover of art and his collection contained some fine examples of modern art. He married in 1862 Henrietta, daughter of Henry Broadhead of Leeds and has four sons and three daughters."
