Watercolour portrait of John Limber Morley
Born December 26 1834 at Hinkley Leicester and educated there. Appointed to Mr Thompson, Pawnbroker in 1848, at Greshams of Leeds in 1854 and for 6 months to John Collinson of York. Came to Bradford in 1856 was a councillor from 1876 to 1881 Alderman, Mayor and Justice of the Peace, 1878
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Mr Morley was born in 1833. His father was a hosiery manufacturer and held some public offices in his own locality. Mr Morley left school at an early age and was apprenticed to J & R Morley of Wood Street, London who were distant connections. This arrangement was never carried out and at the age of 14 Mr Morley was apprenticed to the business of pawnbroking and silversmiths to Mr John Thompson of Leeds.
At the age of eighteen he was exhausted with the management of a branch business. Leaving Leicester about 1852 Mr Morley entered the service of Mr Gresham, pawnbroker of Leeds and afterwards took the management of a similar business at York belonging to Mr Colborn who was at one time Lord Mayor of York.
Afterwards he came to Bradford which was his principal business place. He opened similar business premises in many large towns and at the time of his death he had four places in Bradford and in addition one at Keighley, one at Peterborough and two at Cambridge.
He was a director of the Third Equitable Building Society. In 1876 he was elected Town Councillor for the West Ward. In 1880 he was Deputy Chairman of the Building Improvement Committee.
In 1885 Mr Morley was made Alderman again 1887 he was chosen Mayor. He was also made a Justice of the Peace. Mr Morley was a Liberal in politics and was a Baptist. Mr Morley was a considerable partner in the firm of Cole Marchent & Morley, Engineers, Bradford. He died in 1896."
