Watercolour portrait of James Moore aged 82
from John Sowden's notebooks
"Mr Moore was born at Westcroft, Southowram in 1808 and the early years of his life was spent at Shibden where he carried on the business of manufacturer. About 1852 he removed to Bradford and became a partner in the firm of Moore, Booth & Co - manufacturers of Shearbridge Mills. About 1856 he commenced as a wool and top(?) merchant in partnership with the late Mr William Pollard, and upon Mr Pollard's retirement the business was carried on by Mr Moore and his son Mr Richard Moore. When Mr James Moore retired the firm was altered to Richard Moore and Sons. Mr James Moore was elected for the Great Horton Ward to the City Council and was from 1859 to 1864 a member of the Bradford Board of Guardians.
He was also a director of the Halifax Joint Stock Banking Company and for some time its chairman. Mr Moore was identified with the Methodist New Connexion body in Bradford and was a Liberal supporter. For nearly half a century Mr Moore was a well-known figure in the Bradford Exchange.
He is survived by two sons and one daughter having died in 1897."
