Watercolour portrait of Abraham Mitchell JP Manufacturer
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was born in Bradford in 1826. He was the senior partner of Mitchell Brothers, a firm well-known in the Bradford trade. His father Mr Thomas Mitchell of Burnett Field was one of the pioneers of the Bradford trade and his business was continued by his Joshua, Abraham and Joseph Mitchell. Mr Joshua died not long after his father and Mr Joseph Mitchell died in 1876. The firm was one of the largest mohair spinning manufacturers in the country. He entered the Town Council in 1872, and held a seat as Alderman from 1874 to 1880 and was honoured with the offer of the mayoralty of the borough.
Mr Mitchell was made a Justice of the Peace. In politics he was formerly a Liberal, but with the introduction of the Home Rule Bill he became a Unionist. In religion he was a Wesleyan Methodist.
He married Miss Elizabeth Sutcliffe and was survived by two sons Mr Tom Mitchell and Mr Herbert Mitchell and two daughters. Mr Mitchell was full of character, a strenuous and keen businessman who still found time to serve the borough and left behind him and honoured and respected name. He died in 1896 in the 70th year of his age at Tourmakeady, his Irish estate."
