Portrait of Samuel Dalby by John Sowden, 1888.

Sowden's note in notebook -
'Samuel Dalby was born in 1830 [1831?] in Bradford and was the son of David Dalby an ironmonger in Kirkgate. In his youth he was apprenticed to John Holmes, draper of Darley Street. He however gradually developed a passion for books and his taste ultimately led him to embark with the late Thos Nelson as a bookseller and stationer in Hustlergate and afterwards in Ivegate. Books naturally led to old engravings and then to pictures and later Mr Dalby opened his first shop in the new building in Market Street and started as a fine art dealer. His judgement and opinion on pictures was highly esteemed and much sought after. Of genial disposition, full of anecdotes, his company was much appreciated. He died at the age of 68. 1899.'
