Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Was born at Great Horton in 1856 and apprenticed to an overlooker at a mill. He was very fond of music and cultivated his fine voice so that he became principal tenor at Leeds Parish Church, a position he held for 13 years. He was in great request at Concert and Glee parties. He visited America three times professionally and was very successful whilst there.'
