Note in John Sowden's notebooks:

"John Darlington, J.P. was born in the county of Chester in 1808 & was educated at Knutsford Grammar School. After leaving school he was ? to a solicitors of Northwich but was transferred in 1830 to the late Mr Thos. W. Tottie of Leeds. In 1837 he was appointed manager of the Bradford branch of the Leeds & West Riding Bank. In 1850 he entered into partnership with the late Mr W. H. Hudson, the then Town Clerk of Bfd and the partnership lasted until 1860. In 1850 Mr Darlington was elected Clerk to the Bradford Board of Guardians and about the same time elected first secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. For many year Mr Darlington held the office of Council for the King of the Belgians, and for his services was in 1878 ? a Knight of the Order of Leopold King of the Belgians, and for his services was in 1878 created a Knight of the Order of Leopold. He was consular agent for Italy and France, also Servian(?) Consul and a Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy.

In 1875 he married miss Mary Turlay of Leeds."
