Watercolour portrait by John Sowden of William Draper, bookseller. Born at Heptonstall, March 22nd., 1817. Came to Bradford 1842 and in 1856 commenced business as a bookseller. At the time he was the oldest bookseller in Bradford. Published "The Bradford Temperance Advocate", "The Bradford Pictorial Almanack" and the Drapers Improved Rent Book.
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Mr Draper was born at Heptonstall in 1817, signing the pledge in 1836. He became a great Temperance worker and once was one of the founders of the Hebden Bridge Temperance Society. He came to Bradford in 1842 and in 1856 commenced business as a bookseller. He was the oldest bookseller in Bradford in 1890. He published the ‘Bradford Temperance Advocate’, the ‘Teetotal Star’ and the ‘Bradford Pictorial Almanac’. He also printed ‘Drapers Improved Rent Book’ which had a large circulation and the ‘Good Templars Magazine’. He was a great Sunday School worker and was connected with Eastbrook Chapel and schools for over 50 years. He was generally styled the ‘Father of the Lay Missions’."
