from John Sowden's notebooks:

"Mr Craig was born in 1818 at the village of Neilston, near Paisley, his parents being in humble circumstances.
He attended the village school until he was nine years of age, when he was apprenticed to a joiner. He continued to attend evening classes and studied mechanical drawing and machine construction. He was still little more than a boy when he was employed in repairing(?) machinery in mills in the locality of his native village." To be continued
