Sowden's note in notebooks -
'Was born in Paris. Was intended for a commercial life and was sent to London at the age of 18 to learn English. For 3 years he studied at a private school and for 2 years at the Southampton College. A business career did not appeal to him and at last he drifted into the scholastic profession. He joined the staff of the Grammar School as French master in 1873, retiring in 1903 after having held the position for 30 years. Mons Domry is a bachelor.'
