"Mr Watmough was the first Great Horton man elected by the Bradford Town Council to be an Alderman for his native ward. Mr Watmough occupied a seat upon the Bradford Town Council continuously for 19 years. He was elected as the representative of the Great Horton Ward in November 1876 and to the Aldermanic bench in 1888. He was elected four times without opposition, retiring in 1895. He took an Active part in political matters all his life.

He was able to post of a very early introduction to politics owing to the fact his ability to read led him to be selected at the age of ten to read a newspaper to a group of working men who combined to purchase it; and his work in connection with public matters lasted from his sixteenth year when he was elected to office by the members of the Great Horton Mechanics’ Institute to his retirement from the Town Council. He died in 1896."
