Biographical note in Sowden's notebooks:
Born in 1836 at Coggeshall near Colchester where the family had lived for generations. They were an old Huguenot family who came over to England from the Netherlands from persecution by the Duke of Alva. Mr S. P. Unwin came to Yorkshire in 1852. He was educated privately and at a Brighton School. At the age of 17 he became apprenticed to Mr ??? Rushworth, spinners & manufacturers at Keighley and was afterwards for a period of 12 years with Mr. S. B. Clapham, spinner. Coming to Bradford in 1868 he was for many years concerned in the wool trade but retired some time ago. Mr Unwin is keenly interested in educational affairs. He has been Chairman of the Yorkshire Dialect Society and an active member & also Chairman of the Bronte Society. He was one of the original members of the Board of Governors of the Salt Schools & subsequently of the Shipley School Board and its Chairman for many years. Mr Unwin is a thorough Liberal & is the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Bradford Liberal Association and has done ????????? service for his party. Mr Unwin has been twice married and has ???? two sons and two daughters. Mr Unwin was made a Justice of the Peace for Bradford in the year 1909. He died in 1919.
