Henry Sutcliffe J.P

Mr Sutcliffe who was born in 1840 was the eldest son of Mr Milson Sutcliffe (who was Mayor of Bradford in 1875-6). In the building up of Bowling Dye Works Mr Henry Sutcliffe bore no small part and his industry was rewarded when he was admitted a partner in the form in 1883, thirty years after the attainment of his father to a similar position. With Mr Sutcliffe, Mr Henry Ripley (4th son of the first baronet) joined the firm & when in 1900 the conern was purchased by the Bradford Dyers Association they both became directors of the syndicate. Mr Sutcliffe was Chairman from 1883 to 1893 of the Old Bradford Piece Dyers Association. From 1893 to 1898 he acted in a similar capacity for the Yorkshire Piece Dyers Associations. He was Chairman of the Bradford Dyers Associations soon after its formation & remained Chairman until 1908 when he retired owing to ill-health. He was a President of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce & was placed on the Commission of Peace for the City of Bradford. He was a Liberal until the Home Rule split and afterwards a Liberal Unionist. H was a Congregationalist. Was Chairman of the Wharfedale (ilkley) Estate Co. President of the Ilklley Vocal Society and a member of the Ilkley Hospital. He died in 1908 leaving a widow 2 sons & 7 daughters.
