Watercolour portrait of David Swallow Gas Manager aged 76
from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Was the manager of the Bradford gas light company and when the corporation purchased the company, Mr Swallow was retained as manager at £1000 a year. He was a familiar personality, being a type of Englishman that is fast disappearing, and his ruddy visage, despite his more than 80 years, his neat old-fashioned attire, his equally old-fashioned courtesy, were a pleasant contrast to the bustling, hurrying people of today by whom he was surrounded. Almost to the last he took an active interest in the sayings and doings of the town and was a familiar figure on our streets. He retired with a pension of £500 per annum. He was married, but his wife predeceased him. He died in 1894, leaving no issue."
