"Dr Strauss was appointed in 1873 Rabbi at Bowland Street Synagogue of foreign and British Jews, Bradford. Was born at Berlichingen in Germany and educated at the Sepoenestial(?) Seminary, the Stuttgart Royal Grammar School and the Wuerbeinberg and Luebingen(?) Universities, where he passed his theological state examination and received his Rabbinical Diploma in 1870. Obtained degrees of Dr of Philosophy and MA in 1873. For three years before coming to Bradford he was assistant to Dr von Maier, the Royal Grand Rabbi of the Kingdom of Wuertenberg.
He has taught German and Oriental languages at Ansdale(?) (now Yorkshire United College) and for 21 years at the Yorkshire College (now Leeds University) author of several books and pamphlets. Takes great interest in Charitable and Educational institutions."
