from John Sowden's notebooks:
"Sergeant Joseph Smith was a prominent recruiting sergeant. Born at Nottingham in 1840 formerly a joiner but his master having failed went to London & enlisted in the 33rd Regiment Duke of Wellington West Riding Regt. Went to India & was in the Abyssinian Campaign and received a medal. In 1873 joined the permanent staff 3rd West Riding Regt and in 1874 was employed in Bradford & neighbourhood as a recruiting sergeant til his death. On leaving the service received good conduct & service medal."
