"Was an old Bradfordian.

He was a self-made man who had risen from a very humble position to one of considerable wealth. After spending some time in the wholesale fruit trade, he took to building cottage property and was said at the time of his death to be the largest owner of cottage property in Bradford.

For 30 years he was a director of the Bradford Second Equitable Building Society and was chairman for some time. He died in 1895 in his 68th year, leaving two sons and four daughters."
