This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. A label on the back of the folder reads ' DePuy, Thackray. Beeston. Leeds. 5th/12th August 2011, possibly referring to the DePuy Sythes R&D centre in Beeston.

This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company who moved production to China.

In this image, a person holds a small metal ball with both hands. The ball is polished to a sheen, indicating that its polishing, refining or creation from a raw material is the production of work at the factory. Other balls just like the one in their hands can be seen below, partially obscured by their hands and the bottom of the frame. A machine of some kind can be seen in the background, possibly the one responsible for the work.
