This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.

This image was produced during a public sector strike against government plans to make them work longer and pay more for their pensions. There is not much evidence from this picture (aside from an illegible tag in the shop front to the left of the frame) but other pictures (H.2025.11.49.5A) suggest this to be the strike in Manchester. Two men with cameras are depicted standing on a lamppost each photographing strikers as they moved past them. In between the two posts is a closed gate with two posters, though what they are advertising is difficult to make out.
