This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.

This image was produced during a public sector strike against government plans to make them work longer and pay more for their pensions. The Manchester City Centre Novotel and Premier Inn can be seen and a banner for the University of Manchester can be see also, suggesting that the strike was pictured here at Portland Street. They continued, either down Oxford Road past the University or via some other route, to Whitworth Park for a rally. Many placards and banners can be seen, ranging from the University of Manchester ('Knowledge is power. Unity is strength'), University and College Union ('UCU official dispute', 'Save our pensions') and the NASUWT. A woman can be seen with a dog, a police officer can be seen walking alongside the crowd and several bystanders watch on as well.
