This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.

This image was produced during a public sector strike against government plans to make them work longer and pay more for their pensions. There is not much evidence from this picture (aside from an illegible tag in the shop front to the left of the frame) but other pictures (H.2025.11.49.5A) suggest this to be the strike in Manchester. This image depicts a front view of many strikers marching with placards and posters. Posters from the University College Union ('Save our pensions') and Unison ('Everyone deserves a decent pension') can be seen. There is also a group of students referenced by a placard in the top left, but the top text is cut off by the top of the frame.
