This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.

This image was produced during a public sector strike against government plans to make them work longer and pay more for their pensions. There is not much evidence from this picture (aside from an illegible tag in the shop front to the left of the frame) but other pictures (H.2025.11.49.5A) suggest this to be the strike in Manchester. This image depicts a front view of many strikers marching with banners and placards. Many of the slogans can be read: 'Save our pensions' with the University College Union, 'Standing up for...' with NASUWT, 'Hands off...' with NAPO and 'Eric Pickles ate my pension' with Unison. Two university related banners can also be seen but they are cut off by the edges of the frame. They are possibly from the University of Manchester.
