This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.
This image shows a man wearing a DePuy uniform and glasses posing next to a machine. The machine is labeled as a 'Autoflow Vaqua Processing Unit' designed by Abrasive Developments Limited. Two circular spaces with rubber gloves inside them sit above the label and below a window into the chasis. A ear protection mandate and an energy saving mandate ('Have you switched off. Think! Save energy and money. Climate care'). The emergency stop and and a notice for users ('Will all operators please ensure that the old media in the collection tank at the rear of the machine is emptied after re-gen') can be seen on either side of the label.
