This is a photographic negative produced by photographer Ian Beesley. This was part of a project called 'Thackray Remembered' (Thackray 2011) which was commissioned by the Thackray Medical Museum to document the closure of a Thackray factory which manufactured hip and knee replacements. It was taken over by the American company DePuy who moved production to China.

This image was produced during a public sector strike against government plans to make them work longer and pay more for their pensions. There is not much evidence from this picture but other pictures (H.2025.11.49.5A) suggest this to be the strike in Manchester. There is a large gathering of strikers outside a building (Possibly the court house from H.2025.11.48.32?). Two guards stand in front of the closed door. Amongst the people gathered there is a person in high visibility clothing, another wearing a jacket that says '[Def]end your public [se]rvices', a child and someone with a copy of the Morning Star in their back pocket.
