Is the son of Mr Holmes Smith of Cowling and was born at Halifax in 1863. He was educated at Boro' West School Bradford under the late Mr Thomas Pottes. Mr Smith was the principle of the firm E.J. Smith, Woolcomber, Anchor Works, Dudley Hill, Bradford. He was returned at the head of the poll as one of the first representatives on the City for Tong in its incorporation in 1899. He was Chairman of the Fire Brigade & Licensing Committee in 1902. Of the Sewage Committe in 1903 to 1907 inclusive, during which period the Esholt Estate was purchased by the Bradford Corporation for sewage disposal purposes, the Esholt Scheme prepared and presented to the local Government board: of the West Riding of Yorkshire River Sewage and Solid Refuse Committee 1906 & Chairman until 1907, also Vice-Chairman of the board 1906-7. He was president of the Bradford (?) Church Council 1907. Mr Smith sold his business to Woolcombers Ltd. Mr Smith published in 1915 his book titled 'A Yorkshireman Abroad' being an account of his 30,000 mile tour, which has been very favourably received. Mr Smith married in 1890, Jesse Holmes, eldest daughter of Rof' Crawford of Paisey(?) and has issue one son & one daughter. He died in 1919.
