Watercolour portrait of Superintendent Matthew Laycock, Police Force.

From John Sowden's notes:

Mr Laycock was born in the army (?) and was a Yorkshireman by parentage, his youth being spent at Windhill. He joined the Bradford Police force in 1849 and retired in 1890. Throughout his career his record was not merely without blemish, but of distinguished good service to the town. To a man of his active temperament and devotion it was a hard necessity which forced him into retirement (but owing to an accident whilst on duty he was maimed for life, his left arm splintered past remedy). In consideration of his long and valuable services he was allowed his full salary on retirement. He died in 1891.
